Unconditional Love!

Stroll along the beach!

I had a vision. I was strolling along the beach with water on my left.
I remembered another vision a long time ago....when I had emerged from the water, seen her on the beach and had thought (or wished?) if she would walk with me. At that time, I had wanted to know if I'd see her footprints with mine or parting away. I had wanted to know.
This time.
I have a feeling that if I stole a glance backwards, I might see a trail of footprints going in the opposite direction till they vanish.
I have no desire to look back and test my gut feeling.
Not because it would destress me or sadden me.
No.
It does not matter any more.
I'm willing to let go.
I'm free.
I feel as if I can enjoy the surrounding.
My heart will be content.
At this point I question myself...
Do I want her company?
The answer surprised me!
My heart said;
It does not matter.

I wished her company...
I wanted her to walk beside me...stroll along with me...on the beach.
I kept telling her, pouring my heart out...
Waiting for her to come along...which never happened.

Today,
I thought...
I had expressed my wish.
Done what I could.
Now I leave it to the other person.
Her presence will delight me,
Her company will definitely enhance my life!
But...
Today, I realize,
Whether she comes or not, it does not matter...
I will stroll along...with her memory in my heart
Today, I am free...
Free of my own ties...
Whether she reciprocates or not,
I will keep on loving her but...
Today, I will not wait,
I will move along and take a stroll on the beach and...
Not worry if I will see her footprints beside mine or not...
Because, today...
I love unconditionally

Take a Chill Pill!

I heard the shrill voice of the woman and tried not to wince, the most difficult task at hand.
I shouldn't have been surprised. Living as her neighbor for the past decade, I should've been accustomed to that angry high pitched voice, but I guess I can never get used to negativity in any form. In the past one decade, I had tried reason, logic, friendship but had finally accepted the reality that my senior citizen neighbor was too old to change. Actually I believe in human ability to change at any point in life, so I will rephrase and say that her unwillingness to change.

I heard a loud bang as she kicked a door somewhere in her house. Her venomous tongue was still spewing poison. I tried to close my ears to no avail. I knew something of the sort was coming when I got an invitation to the neighborhood club meeting which I politely declined three days ago. I sometimes attend these meetings to keep in touch but usually excuse myself from them. The petty chatter and gossip that is the main ingredient of these social gatherings simply bore me. I'd rather pick up a history book or watch National Geographic Channel on my tv. My neighbor, on the other hand never misses one. She loves these social get togethers.

Oh my, there goes another loud bang! I hope she did not break something valuable in her rage! Part of me wanted to pity the miserable soul next door but the  empathy evaporated with the sound of her next cursing words reaching my ears while breaching all boundaries of privacy. She had returned from the club gathering fifteen minutes ago and since then was ranting about a lady, our mutual neighbor. The source of all this ranting,  yelling and screaming was the Coach purse that our mutual neighbor had carried to the meeting. For the past fifteen minutes, my neighbor was going crazy and screaming that the Coach purse was not genuine and how she could not stand people who carried fake name brands to get a social standing!

I could clearly picture the scene in her household at the moment. I knew that her retired husband must have found refuge in his study the moment she had started raising her voice. That was his only safe haven under such circumstances, although she would even barge in there on days when someone would dare talk back to her and then her fury would see no end.

 I tried to divert my attention in order not to listen to her rancor, but my thoughts kept asking;
Why was this women making her life so miserable over other peoples' choices? She had more than most people dreamed to achieve in their life times. She was in sound health, was secure with a fat bank balance, was blessed with a life long loving partner and her children were all well settled with children of their own. Why was she not happy? Why were there screaming noises coming out of her house instead of the sound of laughter? Where was all this poison coming from? What was it that she really wanted? What was making her so vicious?

With a heavy heart I realized that it was her own doing!  No one or nothing was ever going to change her because she did not want to change herself. She was perfect in her eyes and she wanted to make everyone and everything else perfect according to her desires. She had everything but she wanted even more! She wanted absolute control...over others!

No One Saw Her Cry!

People said she never cried!

They said that she did not cry when her husband died! She was born two generations before me in a very religious household. She was thirteen when she got engaged to her cousin but a few weeks before the marriage, he got diagnosed with tuberculosis which had no cure in those days and the patients were usually quarantined in sanitariums at some hilly resorts.

The elders in the family were faced with the dilemmas of who was going to take care of the patient and what to do about the wedding? They deliberated and all agreed that it was her destiny to be his wife and hence her duty to take care of him. So the wedding plans went through. She was sent to live with him on the top floor of the four storied house. No one else was allowed on the fourth floor for the fear of catching the deadly virus. Only she was the go between the patient and other family members.

No one saw her cry as day after  day she brought food for him from the ground floor and nursed him at night as his condition worsened. No one saw any tears as she prayed day and night while cleaning his coughed out blood.  She did not even cry when within months, her sixteen year old husband died, leaving her a thirteen year old widow who was still a pure virgin. She simply went back to her parents house with a stone silence!

Three years later, her parents married her to a successful businessman. She secretly nicknamed him Giant, because that's what he reminded her of. Everyone loved and feared Giant. They loved him for his open heart and warm nature but feared his temper. He was a self made man who supported and established his family after his father passed away in his early childhood. People said that he had the Midas touch. Everything he touched turned to gold. He bought houses for his siblings on the same block and started businesses for them. Family members faithfully paid daily visits to his house out of respect. His word was considered the law. He was conscious of his position as the head of the family and enjoyed it.

She loved her husband but there was a gap between them that was bigger than the biggest ocean. His strong nature could never understand her shyness and she could never explain to him why was she that way. He taught her how to drive at the time and in a society where cars were a luxury, but he had to take her outside the city, to the remote locations to drive. She simply did not feel comfortable driving in traffic. The noise of the engines, horns and congestion on the roads scared her.

He loved crowds and crowds frightened her. He was loud. His talk, his laughter, his expressions...everything were loud. She had difficulty raising her voice to her own children. She never scolded them in her entire life. she had the most gentlest of hearts. He loved travels. She preferred the security of home. He had a summer house at the popular resort. Every summer, she looked forward to the two month retreat away from the city life.

They had four children. Two girls and two boys. No one saw her cry when her younger daughter got diagnosed with Epilepsy as a toddler. She simply cut off from all social activity outside her house. Her own house remained the hub of daily visitors. She quietly greeted everyone. People felt for her, loved her, respected her but always wondered how she never complained. She was not very vocal in her conduct. A simpleton at heart, she found peace in keeping herself busy in household chores. Giant could not understand why she loved to slog in the kitchen whole day despite a platoon of kitchen maids.

He also could never understand why she would always disappear whenever he entered the house in the evenings from work. He expected her to share time with him but she always found excuses to leave the room. She could never tell him how scared she was of him. She feared his temper. He could lose temper at the drop of a hat and raise his voice. He would yell at the servants if there was a minute's delay in opening the front gate. He would be bad tempered if a business deal did not go thought that day, so he would find reasons to unleash his anger on the household help. This scared her. She did not like anyone raising voice to others, but she kept quiet and  never complained.

She always prayed that God softened his temper and God answered her prayers but how? He went for a minor surgery which went wrong. His left side was completely and right side was partially paralyzed after he wake up from a three day coma. The kids were still in school and he was on the bed for the rest of his life.

Her life change overnight. Their son had to quit school to overtake the family business. She, who had difficulty talking to strangers, had to step outside the house and deal with all sorts of strangers to run a household in crisis. As income went down and days turned into months and months into years, her hair turned white and wrinkles appeared on her silent face but still no one heard her complain or cry. For seven long years she took care of her paralyzed husband along with the ailing daughter. She never described to anyone the pain, the hurt, the fear, the heartbreak. She never spoke of the hardships of dwindling income and children growing up in the grips of constant fear. She did not cry to anyone about her Giant's bedridden state. He died six months after their daughter passed away in her twenties. Their hearts cried for her as she sat with a deadly silence etched on her face among the people gathered to pay their condolences.

I watched her journey as a child and growing up. I never heard her complain. I never saw her cry either, except when she would raise her hands in prayer and then there would be no end to that stream of tears and she would cry and cry and cry without saying a word!

Depression Hurts!

Depression, Anxiety,
Panic Attacks...

I read a post today. It talked about depression and anxiety and said that today was a Mental Health Awareness day. It made me think!

I come across posters about depression, anxiety and panic attacks in colleges and universities everywhere. Employers are warned to recognize the signs in their employees. Teachers are trained to detect early symptoms in children in schools. Every Physician keeps a brochure on depression in the office. The number of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers and Therapists is on the rise.... I think and I wonder about the causes.

It is the reality of our times. It is the price of individualism and freedom we pay. There are more resources but less satisfaction. People have friends but no companionship. Houses are bigger but vacant. Closets are over flowing but hearts are empty. There are numerous ways to socialize, yet people are lonely. Globalization is everywhere, yet isolation is prominent. Physical distances are overcome but the emotional gaps have widened!...

Why?  I ask!

In the material rat race to outdo the other, people have let go of human values. Technology and science have made life comfortable but replaced human touches. Availability and quantity has cheapened the value. There is simply too much of everything and too much exposure. There is too much awareness too!  Lets start with Children. They are loosing their innocence way too early. In our need to prepare them against the dangers that lurk in societies, we are stripping them of a carefree childhood. The high rate of suicides among young adults pin points to the pressures these precious souls undergo. Adults are overburdened. Elderly are bitter. No one is happy.

We are living in the times of extremes. Everything and everybody has a tendency towards the extreme. On one hand we see extreme acts of kindness, courage, valor and sacrifice...Mother Teresa and  Abdul Sattar Edhi come to mind. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Sattar_Edhi ). On the other hand we see extreme cruelty, selfishness, oppression and obsession...Terrorists, use of chemical weapons and such are predominant examples.

We live in times of fear! Politicians use fear as their favorite toy to play with our psyches. Everything is over dramatized. Media controls our lives and blows things out of proportions to sensationalize the norms in their quest to achieve maximum ratings. Everyone is worried. Everyone wants to live in the moment. No one wants to think about the future because it is too far away and the present seems so insecure.

Everyone wants to be happy but they do not know how. Living in consumer societies, they try buying happiness. Spend extra amounts on living, shopping, partying, socializing, vacationing...everything...but still happiness eludes them.

What is the solution? My mind inquires!

Contentment. Heart replies.
Freedom is precious within limitations.
Exposure is beautiful with guidance.
Technology is an asset with humans.
Houses are homes with people.
Media is priceless with morals.
Books are worthy with wisdom....

Contentment comes from containment. We need to learn to contain our wishes, our longings, our freedoms...in order to have peace of mind!

Oh My!

 Oh My!

Sometimes, one word says more than a whole paragraph.
I recently befriended a lady on social media. She is a very kind hearted person and a devout Christian. I joined her group where she often posts positive quotes.

Today, she posted a prayer and as usual I responded. The post said to start the day with a prayer and I replied that I usually do so since it is mandatory in my religion to do it. She had not realized earlier that I was not a Christian. She was surprised and wrote back, "Oh my, ... ". She was surprised but appeared genuinely interested in reaching out which really touched my heart.

I still cannot get that "oh, my" out of my mind, though. This takes me back to the period when I used to feel the same way. Growing up in a conservative, religious society, I was not exposed to religious diversity. Although my educated and broad minded parents did their best to teach me about other religions and to respect everyone's choices, it was still not enough. I remember my own "oh, my"  the first time I saw someone eating pork sitting right next to me or met a couple living together out of wedlock...

I did not and still refuse to judge people on their choices. I was not questioning them. It was just that I was not used to the idea. The novelty of the situation brought out that "oh, my" in me. This "oh my" was more directed towards my own self than others. It was kind of like "oh my, I hope I do not do anything to offend the other person" kind of an expression. It was a struggle to give space and respect to the other without loosing my own ground.

I still get into those "oh my" situations, but I've learned that the only way out is the exposure. This "oh my" situation is a tense phase that can only be smoothed and removed through trust which requires reaching out and knowing each other.

Ahhh, That Crazy Love

That Crazy Love
He walked into my life uninvited.
I've no idea when or how I fell in love with him.
I know he can never be a part of my life. He is an illusion, a mirage for me, yet, he is essential like plain water in my life.

Why do I care so much, I question?
Why can't I get rid of him in my thoughts, I insist?
Because he introduced  you to many emotions that you were not aware of before meeting him, my dear; my heart replies. He opened your eyes to new possibilities. He taught you how to love from a distance.
I smile and think of him with gratitude.
I cry and think what would be his reaction to my tears.
I make a decision and seek his approval in my thoughts.
Yes I know he will always be there but never there in reality because he is just a character in a movie I watched years ago!

Walk & Talk!

I miss!

I miss those evening walks.
The best time of the day ... after supper!
Those moments looked forward to ... whole day!
My father used to call them ... WALK & TALK!

Those leisurely strolls when one can actually make a conversation.
And smell the roses along the way...
And forget the thorns!
There was no pressing thought of shedding the extra pounds around the waste.
There was no eye on the watch to keep tabs on the ticking clock.
No rush, no sweat, no worry, no hurry.

Not that life did not have any burdens.
No.
It was just that something else was much more important than all the worries in the world.
Weight loss, health issues and being fit were all secondary in nature.
Number one priority was human touch.

It was a time out ... from everything else.
It was a time ... to be together
It was a time ... just for us.
Time to WALK & TALK!
